New year, same me.

Ahhh, the New Year. A time when so many decide to reset and renew. We make goals and promises coupled with an insane pressure to hit the ground running on January 1st, start accomplishing those goals and checking those to-dos off the list.

I am going to be honest with you; I started off the new year TIRED. The new year just so happened to fall at the end of my luteal phase just before menstruation was to begin for me. So, I knew there was a reason I felt tired and guess what? I LEANED into it, Gals. I went to bed early, I watched tv, I did restorative yoga, and meditated. I excused myself from the guilt of feeling like I needed to be extra productive.

As my energy began to rise a bit as the week went on, Wednesday happened. A group of domestic terrorists attacked our nation’s Capitol, and threatened our democracy. We watched in horror as this angry mob of people waltzed into the Capitol, trespassed and stole and Capitol police seemingly stood by. It was a day that should continue to send chills down the spine of our whole nation. And so, as we all should be, I became distracted. Instead of trying to work through this, I accepted the fact that the events unfolding were a hell of a lot more important than my nutrition counseling practice and I LEANED into that. I listened to voices far more important than mine and continued to practice self care.

If you’ve made it this far you’re probably wondering why I have dedicated time to telling you that I have been tired and distracted. I tell you this because, although sometimes we have to triumph through a bad day, sometimes it's important to LEAN into how we feel. Our bodies don’t necessarily follow the calendar year or fiscal year. As women, we follow our own cycle. Our energy changes throughout our cycle and it's important to listen to that. In addition to our own energy, it’s a crazy world and shit happens. Shit that is out of our control and sometimes demands our attention. Said shit sometimes can evoke a lot of emotions. DO NOT suppress those emotions in order to be at your highest productivity level. Feel those emotions and process them, take time to learn and understand what is going on and what you want to do about it. If you think you are going to innovate your best material while tired or distracted, I have news for you, sister.

I guarantee that if you take the time to let yourself process current events and feelings rather than focusing on being a highly productive person you will allow yourself to not only be more productive in the future, but also give yourself the chance to be your most authentic to self.

In this New Year, let’s lean in to how we feel and not let anyone else’s calendar, but your own, dictate your productivity.
